 When considering hiring individuals outside of Massachusetts (domestic or internationally), schools and units must comply with the [Employment Outside of Massachusetts (Domestic and International)](https://harvie.harvard.edu/out-state-employment) Policy (formerly titled the Interim Payroll Policy).

 Such hiring or hybrid and remote work decisions should be made in alignment with a critical talent or business need to perform the work outside of Massachusetts. The nature of the position (i.e., portability of the work) should supports the decision, and not be solely based on the personal preference of the individual or their supervisor.

 Individuals working outside of a Registered Payroll State, including those working outside of the United States, must be hired through a third-party payroll provider.  
  
Note: Certain immigrant visas limit the location where employees may work, and employees on such visas may not be permitted to work outside of Massachusetts and/or may have off-campus work limitations.See Foreign Nationals information below.
